Eanáir 2010                                                                                                                Dáta Eisiúna 26.01.10

Dear Parents,

After the bad weather at the start of the month it is good to be able to report that we are well up and running into the second term of the school year.  Sincere thanks to all those who assisted in many ways with the re-start after the bad weather.  Particular thanks to Betty, our School Secretary, who did trojan work every day during the period, keeping the school web site updated and assisting in other ways with the flow of information.  Considerable work was required on the school grounds – footpaths, approach roads, car parks and playgrounds in order to clear them of ice and compacted snow.  Sincere thanks to those teachers, Board of Management members and parents who volunteered their time and energy to help with the clean up.

The school website proved to be invaluable during this period and is always the first port of call in these situations.  We believe that a TextaParent system, to be used in emergency situations, would also be of great value.  In this Nuachtlitir you will find a form, which you are requested to fill in and return to your child's class teacher.  Upon receipt of these forms, the TextaParent system will be established. It could prove very useful at some stage.

After the extended break, it is important that pupils are re-acquainted with a regular routine.  The importance of proper rest (9.30 p.m. is recommended bedtime) prior to a school day; proper diet (healthy food and avoiding fizzy drinks), a regular homework slot, adherence to the school policy on uniform and punctual arrival (8.50 a.m.), all assist greatly in creating the best possible conditions for pupil learning.

 Comhneartú: Confirmation

All of our 6th class are now busy engaging with Confirmation preparations.  On Wednesday last, a guest speaker, Ms. Geraldine Glasgow, spoke to all the 6th class parents.  Parents really enjoyed Geraldine's presentation.  Last evening, the 'You Shall Be My Witness' Programme commenced.  This is a new undertaking where pupils who wish to participate in a 4 evening sessions programme come together with parent leaders.  This programme has been organised and run by

Ms. Margaret Drew, the Parish Pastoral Worker.  Over 120 pupils have signed up to participate in the programme and the willingness of nearly 30 parents to help out in various ways is great to see.  This is another great forum for community involvement.

On tomorrow Wednesday, 27 January 2010 the parents of the 6th class pupils are invited to the school to focus on ways in which they as parents can engage with their child's Confirmation programme.

7.30 p.m.  Mr. Patten's, Mr. Casey's and Mr. Ruddy's classes.

8.30 p.m.  Ms. Corcoran's, Mr. Kearney's and Ms. O'Brien's classes.

Foín Póca/Giúirléidí:  Mobile Phones/Gadgets:

Mobile phones/gadgets are a potential source of disruption and distraction in a school.  There are also safety issues attaching to mobile phone usage in terms of the emotional safety of other pupils if mobile phones are not used appropriately.  Our school policy regarding the use of mobile phones/gadgets is outlined on page 7 of the Pupils Journal.  Parents are earnestly requested to co-operate with us in this matter in the interest of maintaining a school environment which is safe and conductive to learning.

Roimh Am Scoile Ar Maidin: Before School in the Morning

As the weather hopefully improves, this is a timely reminder concerning procedures before commencement of school in the morning.    Pupils coming to school or congregating on the school grounds or on the nearby greens before

8.50 a.m. are doing so at their own risk.  Parents should be aware that if their children are participating in informal games of football, rugby or hurling on the nearby greens before 8.50 a.m., a risk of injury does obviously exist.  Supervision of pupils commences at 8.50 a.m.  The safest situation is where pupils arrive on the playground as close to 8.50 p.m. as possible.

Cúrsaí Timpeallachta: Environmental Matters

Our selected theme for this year's 'Green Flag' initiative happens to be the very topical and critical issue of 'Water Conservation'.  Recent events have certainly moved this matter to the very top of everybody's agenda.  Last week at our regular Tionóil, Ms. O'Gara's class delivered a presentation on water conservation.  All of the pupils in the school are invited to participate in the upcoming Green School Song contest.  They are invited to compose their own songs/acts on the theme of Water Conservation.  The heats of the competition will be run next week with the final scheduled for Friday, 5 February 2010.  Last year's competition was full of creative and imaginative offerings.

While we focus on Water this year, we are not forgetting the other themes we have developed.  Next Monday 1 February 2010 (St. Brigid's Day/Lá Fhéile Bríde) is the first day of spring.  It is an appropriate day for pupils/parents/staff to think about walking/cycling to school and doing our bit to cut down on global warming while also improving our fitness levels.

Cúrsaí Spóirt: Sports Programme

On a general school level, this term is the Hurling/Camogie season.  Training is beginning this week with a view to selecting our school teams in early March.  We have entered 6 teams in the Cumann na mBunscol leagues and all boys and girls in 4th/5th/6th classes have been given details of the training sessions which will run until early March.  Many thanks to all the teachers who have volunteered to assist and special thanks to Mr. R. Sweetnam who coordinates the programme.

 Nuacht Eile: Other News

·  One of our longest serving 'Lolly-pop' ladies retired recently.  Isabel McDonagh has given 18 years service to the children of Knocklyon.  She has been on duty at the Church crossing for the last number of years.  Her friendly face has assisted thousands of children over the years.  Many thanks Isabel for your dedicated service.

·  The H1N1 Vaccination Programme was conducted last week.  The medical team will be back in St. Colmcille's this week to complete the programme.

·  Best wishes on behalf of all the school community to Fr. Jimmy who has recently been indisposed.

·  In late December, in very tough weather conditions the annual Knocklyon 2Km Cross Country race was held in Cherryfield.  All of the seventy 6th class pupils who participated completed the course.  Particular mention to the following who took the honours:

Boys: Nathan Benson; Liam Stafford; Adam Maher.

Girls: Olivia Storey; Aoife Murphy; Alicia Fitzpatrick.

All of the above will go ahead to represent our school in the South Dublin Cross Country Series shortly.

·  Well done to Ms. Maher’s 5th class who were the overall winners recently in the Nutgrove Shopping Centre’s ‘Design a Christmas Decoration’ Competition.  Their work was on display in Nutgrove for a few weeks.  As their prize, the class will shortly be brought to an Art and Craft workshop in the Giddy Studios.

Sábháilteacht ar an Idirlíon:  Safety on the Internet

Parents are reminded again that it is highly inadvisable that children of primary school age should be left unsupervised on the internet.  It is also worth bearing in mind that Facebook and other social networking sites do have a minimum age requirement attached.  Primary school pupils are generally under the stipulated age.  The responsibility rests on parents to monitor and supervise their children’s activities in these areas.  Otherwise considerable difficulties may arise.

Scéalaí ag Teacht:  Storyteller Coming

On Wednesday 3 February 2010 the very well known and acclaimed storyteller, Niall de Búrca, will be visiting our school.  His visit last year was one of the absolute highlights of the year for the pupils and they were hugely engaged by his stories.  The cost per child is €2 and we are all looking forward to his visit.

Athbhreithniú Lár Bliana : Mid-Year Review

As we approach the mid point of the school year parents are reminded that they should keep in touch with their child's progress.  Work in your child's homework copy is a useful gauge of progress.  If you feel that there is any area in which your child is encountering difficulty, you are advised to contact your child's class teacher.

Both myself and Mr. Connolly (Deputy Principal) spend a considerable time each week in classes monitoring pupils' progress and are very happy with the work rate, attitude and diligence of the overwhelming majority of our pupils.

 Beir bua agus beannacht,
